Inline Erasure Coding
Explains inline erasure coding.
Inline erasure coding is an erasure coding mechanism to write data to the backup volume at the earliest possible time, rather than waiting for scheduled or manual offloads to happen on the volume. Inline erasure coding reduces the amount of storage that needs to be provisioned for front-end volumes. Inline erasure coding is referred to as instant tiering.
Inline erasure coding is a process where the data on the tiered front-end volume is continuously erasure-coded and written to the backend erasure-coded (EC) volume.
Data Fabric supports inline erasure coding for S3 bucket volumes only.
Objects ingested in s3 bucket are stored in a S3 bucket volume configured for erasure coding. Subsequently, data from the S3 bucket volume is erasure coded and stored in the corresponding EC back-end volume, thereby freeing up space from S3 bucket volume.
Inline erasure coding can be configured at two levels:
- Cluster level. When you enable inline erasure coding at the cluster/fabric level,
inline erasure coding is enabled for every bucket created afterward. If inline
erasure feauture is enabled and
ec_scheme storage_class labelis attached to the S3 account, all the buckets created tagged to the corresponding S3 account are created as inline EC S3 buckets. - cluster level
